Autumn is approaching!  A stretch of back road you've ridden during the summer changes, suddenly alive with color—burnt orange, deep red, golden yellow. Riding through is like moving through a painting that shifts with every bend in the road.  The cool air hits differently on a bike in the fall. It’s crisp and clean.  You feel it on your face, your gloves, and the edges of your jacket. It wakes you up, sharpens your senses, and makes you more present in every mile.

This season brings extra considerations for riders, for both comfort and safety. Having the right outerwear jacket will make those Autumn rides better than the one before!   

Here are some key points to keep in mind when selecting a jacket:

• Material Choices
  • Textile: Often insulated or with removable liners. Look for windproof and water-resistant shells.
  • Leather: Excellent abrasion resistance but usually needs added thermal layers underneath for warmth.
• Lining & Insulation
  Removable thermal liners are useful as temperatures change throughout the day. Some jackets also have waterproof liners or laminated shells for rain protection.
• Ventilation
  Even in cooler temps, airflow is useful to prevent overheating during physical exertion. Look for zippered vents you can close up tight when it’s colder.
• Fit & Coverage
  A snug (but not tight) fit reduces cold air penetration. Longer tails help cover the lower back, where wind sneaks in easily.
• Visibility
  Cooler weather often means shorter days and lower visibility. Reflective piping or hi-viz panels can make a difference.
